Week-3 Integrative Seminar

We started our class with an introduction to a novel: Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Our teacher, Malvika read out some parts of the first chapter and discussed it with the whole class. During the whole class we stressed a lot on the metaphors used my Kafka in the novel.

I think it was a little bit weird how George’s family just accepted that he had transformed into a gigantic vermin and they didn’t even try to find out what happened, why and how it happened. Also, I was amazed by George’s reaction, he didn’t care about anything as much as he cared about his work. His only worry was that he’ll lose his job, even though he hates it.

George was the one who helped his family, he only worked so that he could earn and feed his family. But towards the end the situation changed and George thought that he has become a burden on his family. He gives up on himself and eventually dies.

After reading the story we were asked to write 10 metaphors on ourself:

  • I am a touch-me-not plant
  • I am the flashlight to my friend’s phone
  • I am the sea and my thoughts the unwanted weeds
  • Shuchi is a Pearl, she’s always in a shell
  • Shuchi is a tide, sometimes high, sometimes low depending on the moon
  • Everyone is a star but I am the pole star
  • I am in internet browser
  • I am Chandler Bing, clumsy, awkward and sarcastic
  • I am a bird and the sky, my freedom
  • She is an unplugged radish, lush green leaves gave away nothing of what was within
  • Every time she spoke, honey dripped from her mouth
