This was our first class of sustainable systems . I had no idea what I would be studying in this class except the fact that it is going to be related to sustainability (obviously). We talked about sustainability and what it is and the aspects of sustainability.
Sustainability
-Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.
We first described sustainability and then talked about the UN and its Goals for sustainable development. The UN goals are: idea of how the world has come together to work for sustainability:
The UN goals that we’ll be discussing this semester are:
- No poverty
- zero hunger
- good health
- quality education
- clean water
- Affordable and clean energy.
We discussion the three aspects of sustainability – Environmental, Economic and Social. Every student in class came up with examples of sustainable developments in and around our daily life.
We also discussed about:
Carbon Footprints: Is the amount of green house gases mainly, carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organisation, or community.

Bi- cycle Network: A few places like Amsterdam and and Australia have come up with well established bi cycle networks and the government is promoting this at a huge scale. We had also talked about how it can help improve pollution.
Clean energy: the energy production methods with the least amount of impact on the environment.
System: A system is a set of things working together to form a whole. Systems are closed cycles.
We were then given a small assignment in class to think about a sustainable plan for the future which either effect the planet, people or profit. As we discussed ma’am kept adding our ideas and problems to either of these columns.

We were given an assignment to analyse and draw a mind map of our daily routine and note down the most sustainable and non sustainable things we do in our daily life.
